Jörg Jeremias fasst die wesentlichen Aussagen des Alten Testaments über Gott für heutige Leser zusammen und verbindet dabei die historische Betrachtungsweise mit einer gattungsgeschichtlichen und einer systematischen.
This volume connects the historical background of the Old Testament with its generic history and with systematic theology.
Jörg Jeremias outlines for the modern reader the most important ideas emerging from the Old Testament concerning God. He connects the historical background with the generic history and aspects from systematic theology. In this volume »Theology of the Old Testament« the author outlines the most important ideas about God in the Old Testament. Some of the texts, however, span more than 500 years and belong to very different genres: The Old Testament is not a homogeneous book but a library of separate volumes. Thus, the author connects for the modern reader the historical background with a generic history as well as with aspects from systematic theology. His choice of themes reflects the cohesion of the Old and New Testaments and serves to inform the modern reader.

Leseprobe:
With his "Theology of the Old Testament" Jörg Jeremias intends to summarize the most important testimonies about God in the Old Testament. Yet the texts cover a period of more than half a millennium and they belong to very different kinds; the Old Testament constitutes no book, but a library. Therefore the present work methodologically combines historical, formcritical and also systematic reflections. It starts with Psalms and wisdom texts, the roots of theological reflection. Special attention is given to new and important concepts of exilic times. The themes are selected and weighed according to considerations relating to the connection of the two testaments and to the interests of modern readers.
